Canora RCMP: Intoxicated man slept naked on public picnic table

Canora RCMP were dispatched to the Good Spirit Lake area for a report of a man sleeping naked on a picnic table.

Canora/Sturgis RCMP deal with an altercation with hitchhiker, a suspicious package, an assault with a golf club and two rollovers.

CANORA, STURGIS — The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 116 calls from May 22 to June 5, some of which included:

  • four 911 Act calls,
  • four abandoned vehicles,
  • two animal calls,
  • five assaults,
  • one assault with a weapon,
  • one Aeronautics Act call,
  • one breach of peace,
  • one break and enter,
  • two Coroners Act calls,
  • three criminal harassments,
  • one dangerous driving,
  • three disturbing the peace,
  • four failures to comply with conditions,
  • two frauds under $5,000,
  • two harassing communications,
  • one impaired operation of a motor vehicle,
  • nine Mental Health Act calls,
  • 12 mischiefs,
  • two offender management calls,
  • one possession of stolen property over $5,000,
  • one possession of a weapon dangerous to the public,
  • one public mischief, five suspicious person calls,
  • four thefts under $5,000,
  • five traffic collisions,
  • 32 traffic offenses,
  • one trespassing,
  • one uttering threats,
  • four prisoners, and
  • five Child, Youth and Family Services Act calls.

Public intoxication and naked

On May 24, the Canora RCMP were dispatched to the Good Spirit Lake area for a report of a man sleeping naked on a picnic table. The man was arrested for public intoxication. Due to the man's level of intoxication, EMS was called, and the man was taken to hospital for medical care.

Altercation with hitchhiker

A man picked up a woman known to him who was hitching on Highway 49 on May 26. The man drove the woman to Canora. After an argument occurred over food, the woman threatened to stab the man with a nail file. The man drove his truck and parked it outside the Canora RCMP Detachment where members of the RCMP observed the woman throw hot tea onto the man inside the truck. The woman was arrested and charged with assault with a weapon and placed on no contact conditions with the man. The investigation is ongoing.

Suspicious package

Canora RCMP investigated a suspicious package located behind a business on the 300 block of Main Street in Canora on May 28.

Businesses in the vicinity were evacuated. Schools and daycares in the general area enacted their hold and secure protocols.

Canora RCMP asked members of the public to avoid the Main Street area between Second Avenue and Third Avenue at the time.

The origin and contents of the package have not yet been determined.

The suspicious package was neutralized later that afternoon and Main Street re-opened to traffic. Canora RCMP continue to investigate with the assistance of the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Explosive Disposal Unit, Forensic Identification Services and Saskatoon Provincial General Investigation Section.

Golf club assault

On May 30, the Canora RCMP were dispatched to a disturbance call at a residence in Canora. Police attended the home and learned a man had been assaulted with a golf club. The man sustained injuries to his hand from the assault and was taken to hospital by EMS. A 41-year-old woman from Canora was arrested and charged with assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm. The man was charged with failing to comply with a court order for failing to abide by his no contact conditions with the woman. The investigation is ongoing.

Vehicle rollover

The Canora RCMP were dispatched on May 30 to a single vehicle rollover at the Crystal Lake turnoff and Highway 9. Police attended the scene and learned an SUV drove into the ditch and rolled causing both males occupants of the vehicle to be ejected from the vehicle. Both men were taken to hospital by EMS with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Canora RCMP continue to investigate with the assistance of a Saskatchewan RCMP collision reconstructionist.

Fatal motorcycle rollover

On May 30 at approximately 11:50 p.m., Canora RCMP received a report of a motorcycle rollover on Highway 49 in Preeceville. Officers responded immediately along with local fire and EMS. The driver of the motorcycle was declared deceased by EMS at the scene. He has been identified as a 47-year-old man from the Preeceville area. His family has been notified. A female passenger on the motorcycle was assessed by EMS at the scene for injuries described as non-life-threatening. Canora RCMP continue to investigate with the assistance of a Saskatchewan RCMP collision reconstructionist.

Sports ground drinkers

The Canora RCMP were dispatched on June 2 to a complaint of three men drinking alcohol near the Canora sports grounds. Police attended the scene and arrested a man for disturbing the peace. Police record checks showed the man was on a condition to abstain from the consumption of alcohol. The man was charged with failing to comply with conditions of an undertaking and released from custody once sober.

Found property

On June 5, the Canora RCMP were dispatched to a report of found property in the RM of Invermay. An enclosed trailer with a brand-new side by side was recovered after having been reported stolen from the Swan River area on May 30. The investigation is ongoing.
