Festive atmosphere attracts crowd to Cinco de Mayo

Approximately 600 to 800 Canora and area residents came through the doors at the third annual Cinco de Mayo held at the Sylvia Fedoruk Centre on May 5.

CANORA - Canora’s third annual Cinco de Mayo was held at the Sylvia Fedoruk Centre on May 5, keeping vendors busy with approximately 600 to 800 Canora and area residents coming through the doors, according to Brandi Zavislak, community development officer.

“It went really well,” said Zavislak. “With the band performing, we charged $5 admission – or just $10 for a household – to make it affordable for everyone. The family dance went over great, all ages were dancing.”

There were a total of 20 vendors featuring food, jewelry, rare coins and other items, which was all they had room for according to Zavislak. One of the vendors, Ketchen Lake Bible Camp sold plants, baking and Tween Lakes Coffee (Norquay) to raise funds for the upcoming season. KLBC also took entries all evening for a draw to win a free week of camping this summer. The draw was made during the morning service on Sunday, May 5 at Gateway Community Church, one of the churches supporting the Camp. The winner was Coy Kraynick of Canora.

Zavislak said she and other members of the Canora Tourism Fundraising Committee always try to include something new when they organize Cinco de Mayo each year.

“Everyone seems to enjoy the festive atmosphere,” she said. “Last year we didn’t have enough parental supervision for the bouncy castle, so we changed to the family dance for this year.”

Providing the live music was the Jackie Guy Band, with their popular mix of “Jackie Guy originals” and old-time favourite including: Good Hearted Woman, Rose Garden, Drivin’ My Life Away and Tequila.

“We’re very happy with how Cinco de Mayo has grown into this huge event in Canora,” said Zavislak. “This year we had many visitors from out of town, including Burgis Beach, Yorkton, Sturgis and Preeceville.”

This year's Cinco de Mayo raised just over $10,000, which will be used toward community improvements in Canora.

“It’s so great to get such awesome support from the community,” concluded Zavislak.

Now that Cinco de Mayo is in the rearview mirror, Zavislak and the Canora Tourism Fundraising Committee members are turning their attention to planning the Beer Gardens and Burgers event at the Train Station, coming up on June 18.
