Residents of the Kamsack Nursing Home, along with members of the Heart and Home Quilting Club and representatives of town council, assembled around a large table on April 25 to admire the 20 quilts that were donated by the club to the nursing home.

KAMSACK — Members of the Heart and Home Quilting Club at Kamsack presented a collection of 20 quilts that the members have made to the Kamsack Nursing Home.

The quilts were displayed on a large table for viewing by residents, quilters and representatives of town council on April 25.

In February, club members presented to the nursing home a collection of bibs that they had made, and while there, they had asked staff members what they might need, Lise Rochefort, spokesperson for the quilting club, said. “They asked for colour.”

The home has 60 beds, Rochefort said. Plans are over time to make and deliver enough quilts so that every bed can have one.

“It might take a few years to make that many, but we’re working on it.”

The club meets for sewing get-togethers from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. September through to April at the United Church in Kamsack, she said. The members, who number about 15 in the core group, sew the covers, and then Bobbi Wanner of Made Lake assembles them with batting and backing.

“We thank members of the community who have donated the material that is used to sew the quilt covers,” Rochefort said. These quilts are single bed size, measuring about 50 inches by 70 inches.

Some of the quilt tops are made with 2.5-inch and 4.5-inch material, so nothing is wasted, she said. Members use their imaginations to design the covers or refer to sample designs.

The club, which has been at work since 1993, holds a show and tea each October when all members’ projects are displayed.

To complete the quilts, monetary donations are needed for the purchase of batting and flannel for the backings, she said.

The washable quilts will be labelled and then will be used as needed, said Marianne Francis, the nursing home’s recreation co-ordinator. They’re a nice size in that they can be used for a resident in a Broda chair or a wheelchair, and will be welcome when residents are seated on the outdoor patio.

“They’re really nice to have,” Frances said.

“We’re grateful to the quilting club,” said Mayor Beth Dix, who attended the presentation along with Councillor Brian Kirkpatrick. “Club members are very community-oriented, and so much of what they do is donated to the community.”

“It was really nice to see the town council represented here and supporting us,” Rochefort said, adding that a week ago, 16 smaller “rag quilts” made of leftover material were donated to the Family Resource Centre at its new location on First Street.
