Victoria School students help Eaglestone residents plant gardens

Grade 1 and 2 students put their school lessons to practical use.

KAMSACK — Seventeen Victoria School students at Kamsack went to Eaglestone Lodge on May 28 to help a group of seniors plant the lodge’s four raised garden beds.

The students, in Grades 1 and 2, have been learning about planting and plants and this was a good time to leave the school and visit Eaglestone, said Emma Jones, a grades 1 and 2 teacher.

Eaglestone had acquired the beds from the Town of Kamsack last year, said Annette Purchase, the lodge’s activity co-ordinator. So this will be the second year that a garden will have been planted in the raised boxes, located along a walkway in the lodge’s backyard.

What is grown in these gardens is for the residents, Purchase explained. After planting the seeds and bedding plants, the gardens will be looked after, including watering and weeding, by the residents.

Once the seeds were placed, and the bedding plants were tucked into the ground under the guidance of the seniors, the whole group was invited into the lodge, where slices of watermelon were served.
