The Yorkton Brick Mill Heritage Society has scrubbed its historic building clean as it continues with its renovations.
The society recently washed away decades-old graffiti from the old mill鈥檚 outer walls. The drawings were discovered after the wooden annex storage space attached to the mill was removed.聽
鈥淚n preparation for fixing the east wall, we needed to move...the graffiti and so on before [we could] get to the brick,鈥 said Larry Pearen, a committee member with the society.
Pearen estimated that the graffiti was 10-15 years old.
The Heritage Society hired Wilhelm Masonry from Estevan to wipe away the graffiti. They used steam to erase the wall paintings.
鈥淸They] cleaned up the site聽 Pearen said.
The removal process cost $3000. The money was provided through a grant from the Painted Hand Community Development Corporation.
鈥淲e鈥檙e very lucky,鈥 Pearen said.
The Heritage Society is continuing to renovate the old mill. There next step is to address the foundation and work on the cracks in the east wall.
鈥淲e do have a black bank balance, which is a good thing as we apply for more grants and funding,鈥 Pearen said.
