Moosomin鈥檚 Director of Parks and Recreation, Mike Schwean, brought a new winter activity to the town this winter
A skate patch was created around Bradley Park to provide an additional option for winter recreation, since some options have been restricted because of Covid-19 restrictions.
The idea was born when Schwean was thinking of how to keep people coming to the parks but still stay safely apart from each other.
鈥淚 did not know what kind of restrictions they were going to put on outdoor rinks. I felt bad that we didn鈥檛 have any public skating regardless of the indoor rink because we were not able to monitor numbers. So we just tried to come up with way that we could have a bunch of people skating and still keep six feet apart. Obviously, once we can keep them six feet apart it is just a matter of length,鈥� said Schwean.
This is the first year that Schwean developed this track, and hopes it becomes a yearly tradition.
The skate path was named the Peter Nabholz Circle Skate Way.
鈥淧eter has done the flooding for our outdoor rink, he volunteers a ton of work. He has done it for over 10 years, ever year so I think that naming the skate way after him will be the prudent thing to do. It is something I think he deserves,鈥� said Schwean.
There is no charge to enjoy this new winter activity.
The skate path consists of 500 yards of flooded roadways. The skate paths have brought the community together.
鈥淭he Skate Way has been an amazing addition in COVID times,鈥� said Schwean. 鈥淭he track allows 500 yards for people to skate and socially distance. We have seen skaters from three years old to 73 years old out on the track, which has been awesome.
鈥漈he Skate Way has been an overwhelming success so far this winter, with Schwean adding, 鈥淲e鈥檝e had at least a dozen calls from people asking where they can buy skates because they have not skated in years and wanted to try out the track."
鈥淪taying active is the most important thing we can do for our mental and physical health. If we participate, laugh and have fun, we will be able to stay young.
