INDIAN HEAD — Accessing larger communities for medical appointments can be challenging for some individuals, particularly seniors, low-income individuals, and those with limited mobility. Five Indian Head residents who recognized this dilemma have joined together, bringing forth an initiative for a volunteer-driven transportation service, Wheels for Wellness.
Wheels for Wellness was modelled after the Gravelbourg Cares shuttle, which has proven to be successful. The initiative is being designed to address the need for accessible, affordable transportation in Indian Head and the surrounding communities, providing shuttle rides to Regina, Moose Jaw, Weyburn, Saskatoon, Yorkton and Melville.
“We know that missed medical appointments can lead to serious health setbacks,” said Marg Ollett, committee chair for Wheels for Wellness in a press release. “This service is about dignity, health and community support, ensuring no one is left behind because they can’t drive or afford a ride.”
The committee members come from various backgrounds, including experience in clinics, care homes and municipalities. They are currently recruiting drivers and welcoming donations to support vehicle maintenance, fuel and insurance.
All rides will be provided using the designated Wheels for Wellness vehicle by volunteer drivers on a donation basis.
“Our goal is to make sure no one in our community has to skip or delay healthcare because they can’t find a ride,” Ollett added. “We are building a program that’s rooted in compassion, community and local support.”
The service is slated to begin in the fall of 2025. Committee members are encouraging anyone who is interested in volunteering, donating or learning more about the shuttle service to reach out to [email protected].
