Did you know that you can expand your genealogy know-how? You can advance yourself from a shoebox of photos and family notes to an actual certificate and solid knowledge on how to do genealogy research. The Saskatchewan Genealogical Society offers certification courses on a number of subjects. The relaxed pace of summer is a great time to expand your genealogy horizons!
Log on to www.saskgenealogy.com and click on the 鈥渆ducation鈥� tab. This will take you to a list of courses that include the 鈥淪askatchewan Record Searcher Certification Course鈥� that qualifies you to conduct a search of the basic Saskatchewan sources, to write a documented research report and conduct your business in an ethical manner; the 鈥淪askatchewan Researcher Certification Course鈥� that will qualify you to analyze genealogical research problems, to conduct research in all records sources in Saskatchewan and write well documented research reports; and the 鈥淎boriginal Researcher Certification Course鈥� that focuses on tracing M茅tis and Aboriginal ancestry on the Prairie Provinces.聽 This is an online course that is divided into ten sections, with research assignments as part of the questions for each section. All questions can be searched online.

The SGS has many features for genealogists. Their website says: 鈥淭he Saskatchewan Genealogical Society Library and Research Room is made up of materials based on the needs and interests of its membership and the general public. These resources range from how to get started doing research in each area to indexes and records that enable the researcher to trace their ancestors from Saskatchewan back to the 1600鈥檚 in Canada and the United States, the 1500鈥檚 in Great Britain and Scandinavia and the 1700鈥檚 in Europe. A selection of gazetteers and maps help the researcher to find the names and locations of communities their ancestors lived in. This information helps with learning the current names of communities and points to possible locations where the records they need could be found today.鈥�
The Saskatchewan Genealogical Society (SGS) Library and Research Room is located in Room 110 鈥� 1514 11th Avenue in Regina, Saskatchewan. It is open to the public Monday through Friday, but hours vary and have been reduced so before you make the trip in to Regina, call the above number to check current hours.
The Yorkton Branch of the Saskatchewan Genealogical Society meets monthly (except for July and August) at the Yorkton Public Library. The group is open to anyone interested in genealogy, and whether are just getting started in tracing your family tree, have been researching for a long time, or are simply fascinated with history, you are invited to come to the meetings. New members are always welcome. Meetings offer interesting speakers and presentations, and informal discussions about genealogy research successes and struggles. At one time or another, everyone hits a brick wall with research and communication together often brings a possible solution of where to research next.
