The City of Yorkton has announced the intersection at Darlington Street and Dracup Avenue is closed until further notice following a standoff in which four vehicles arrived simultaneously at the four-way stop.
鈥淎t this point nobody knows whose turn it is to go,鈥 said Mayor Bob Maloney. 鈥淭he City had no choice but to set up a detour around the area.鈥
Motorists are currently being diverted to Smith Street or York Road via Mayhew Avenue or Seventh Avenue while the RCMP attempts to get things moving.
鈥淯sually, someone gets fed up and goes, but this group is particularly stubborn,鈥 said Cst. F. R. Strated. 鈥淲e may have to bring in tow trucks.鈥
鈥淚鈥檓 sick of people not understanding how four-ways work,鈥 said driver Peter Mule. 鈥淚t鈥檚 that frikkin鈥 woman鈥檚 turn, she was clearly the first one here, and I鈥檓 not moving until she does.鈥
That woman is Joanna Putz, who got confused when all four vehicles arrived at the exact same time.
鈥淭here should probably be some rules about who goes first in case of a tie,鈥 she said. 鈥淢aybe, like, the person on the right should go. I guess they don鈥檛 do that because how would anybody know who鈥檚 on the right?鈥
Maloney said he was not really surprised by the incident.
鈥淚鈥檝e lived in Yorkton for decades and see how people drive around here,鈥 he said. 鈥淔rankly, I鈥檓 surprised this doesn鈥檛 happen more often.鈥
