LUCKY LAKE - A benefit car show organized every year in the village of Lucky Lake also featured some eye-grabbing races for this year's event.

The annual Young Heroes Car Show was held on the grounds of the community hall, featuring a number of classic autos on display for people to enjoy, as well as concessions inside the hall.

But outside beside the hall was where the real rip-roaring action was being held.

The Lucky Lake Grand Prix lawnmower races, featuring the Triple-Town-Trophy circuit, turned out to be a massive hit.

The name comes from the three-town tour the races will be held in, starting with this event in Lucky Lake. From there, mower races will be held in Beechy during the village's centennial celebrations on July 20, followed up by a Grand Mower Rally in Demaine on August 9. Finally, the grand final for the Mower Racing Cup will be held on September 20 during Beechy's Western Days.

Proceeds from the Young Heroes Car Show events have routinely benefited local organizations within the province. In 2021 and 2022, donations were made to the Jim Pattison Children's Hospital in Saskatoon, and in 2023 and 2024, donations were made to the local Health Foundation in Lucky Lake to help purchase new ceiling lifts for resident rooms.

The car show is the creation of Olivia Netzel, who began it in 2021 while in Grade 10 at Lucky Lake School. She organized the event as a part of her Leadership 30 course that she began in late 2020. Conducting field and online research, Olivia sent applications to several organizations such as The Jim Pattison Children's Hospital, the Saskatchewan government for permission due to Covid-19, the Village of Lucky Lake and more.

Netzel's efforts have paid off, as she was nominated for a National Youth Philanthropy Award by The Jim Pattison Hospital, and she was recognized during an online celebration as an Outstanding Youth Philanthropist in November 2021.

Today, Olivia remains grateful for the opportunity to help others and is happy to see the car show continue, with this year's event being the fifth annual edition.
