Sturgis Sports Day provides weekend alive with action

Fun weekend was held at Sturgis, highlighting children's events that featured an rooster scramble and sheep riding

STURGIS — The Sturgis sports grounds were alive with action when eager fans took to the grounds for the annual Sports weekend on June 21 and 22.

“The weekend was well attended on both days. It was a slow start on Saturday, but on Sunday it was better attended,” stated a representative from the Sports Committee.

The weekend kicked off with a pancake breakfast at the Sturgis READ Club.

The Etomaimie Riders Club hosted gymkhana events on both days with several participants from across the local area. There was a full day of events for children that featured train rides by Gerald Ignatiuk, a rock wall, and Zorb body inflatable balls, as well as pedal cars from Madge Lake Bible Camp.

An outdoor trade show featured five different vendors displaying their products.

The Sturgis Kin Club provided a booth with cotton candy, mini donuts, and popcorn, the Barveenok Ukrainian dance Club sold ice cream, and the Sturgis Bingo sold Nevada tickets.

Children were encouraged to try out the fun sheep-riding event and the rooster scramble for all children.

A pancake breakfast at the READ Club kicked off events on Sunday, followed by a Cowboy Church service.

A car, truck, and tractor show and shine featured six entries, with fan favourite awards handed out. Winners were Lora Cole with a 1969 Roadrunner; Jack Lesanko of Sturgis was second with his 1968 Mercury, and Rodney Machyn of Swan River placed third overall with his 1970 Super Bird. Other entrants were Darren Descalchuk, of Preeceville, 1986 Pontiac, and Randy Boetten of Yorkton with a 1967Ford F150. Bob Bartch of Sturgis featured his two cars on display, a 1049 Rover and a 1937 Ford. Mike Andrusko also had a tractor on display1953 Minneapolis.

Thomas Hazelett provided entertainment on Saturday.

Paws and Claws were in attendance on Sunday.

The chuck-wagon and chariot races were the highlight of the weekend. There were 51 chariot racers, with the top three racers being Colin Kilborn, Twyla Salmond, and Carol Hooge, and 31 chuck wagon entries, with the top three racers being Kan Salmond, Colin Kilborn, and Riley Braaten.
