Blast from the Past: Unity town council approves new fire hall

A provincial election was called by Premier Allan Blakeney. There were three candidates confirmed to be running in the Wilkie Constituency, all from the Town of Wilkie: Delaine Scotton, NDP; Jim Garner, Conservative; and Linda Clifford, Liberal.

Unity town council approved the construction of a new fire hall, at a cost of $70,000.

Sod turning ceremonies were held for a new church in Luseland, the New Canadian Martyrs Church. A basement was to be dug and, once the foundation was completed, the former Broadacres Church would be moved onto it.

Unity Composite High School proficiency medals were awarded to Joan Quick, Grade 7; Shannon Wood, Grade 8; John Rutledge, Grade 9; Rod Elder, Grade 10; Kathy Rutledge, Grade 11; and Kathy Romanowski, Grade 12.

Wilkie’s RENEW project got off to a good start with the planting of mature trees on the Main Street boulevard.

Winning the Hi-Point medals in the Unity Composite Junior High School track meet were Chelsea Scherr and Phillip Quincey-Smith for Grade 7, Jaycie Neil and Dan Herrick for Grade 8 and Carleen Alexander and Sean Ulsifer for Grade 9.

Not returning to the Senior Brewers baseball team were veterans David Schell, Travis Sack, Rory Jenson and Derek Sarns.

North West Terminal was waiting to hear about their bid for federal funding towards their proposed ethanol plant.

The Unity RCMP detachment hosted a barbecue for residents in order to build relationships with the community during Police Week.
