Blast from the Past: Wilkie golf tournament drew 95 golfers

50 years ago

Parents of approximately 150 pupils attending the Unity Separate School withheld their children from classes as a show of protest over a disputed decision by the school board not to have Albert McGuire continue as principal for the next school term. Only some 70 children showed up for the school day.

Ninety-five golfers came out to the Wilkie medal play golf tournament. Many out-of-town golfers attended, from places such as North Battleford, Unity, Biggar, Meadow Lake, Maidstone and Marsden. Winning the women’s overall title was Norma Docken of Wilkie.

The Swarthmore District Women’s Institute hosted a group of 35 WI members from New Brunswick. A number of families in the Unity area billeted the visiting women during their four-day stay.

20 years ago

The 100th anniversary celebrations for St. Paschal’s Church in Leipzig saw 630 people attend mass on the Saturday afternoon. Many visitors camped at the townsite for the weekend and 450 attended the Sunday morning mass, followed by brunch served on the grounds. Tony Baumel, celebration chair, was pleased with how everything went.

A new Knights of Columbus float, a replica of ship, made its debut in the Unity Western Days parade, winning first prize.

Phyllis Murrell and Eunese Partington attended a 30th anniversary reunion of the Saskatchewan War Brides Association in Regina.

Wilkie Co-op was selling softener salt for $3.99 a bag.
