NORTHEAST — The Lakeland District for Sport, Culture and Recreation (LDSCR) will see a change in leadership as long-time executive director Lyle Campbell retires after 17 years, following 19 years as the Zone 7 Sports Council sport co-ordinator.

The LDSCR board of directors announced the appointment of Helen Meekins as its new executive director, effective June.

Campbell has worked in the sport and recreation field for over 40 years and was born and raised in Carrot River. He has served on several provincial committees:

  • North East Recreation and Parks Association (NERPA);
  • Saskatchewan Recreation Society (SRS);
  • Saskatchewan Association of Recreation Professionals (SARP);
  • Community Initiatives Fund's adjudication committee;
  • KidSport

Campbell is most looking forward to spending more time with family and friends, enjoying his acreage, and “hopefully some travel".

“My co-workers and colleagues, the satisfaction of seeing projects and initiatives come to a successful conclusion, and being part of a creative and dynamic team,” Campbell said when asked what he would miss.

The LDSCR announced Meekins as the new executive director. A news release stated: “Helen brings to the role a deep passion for community development, a proven track record of leadership and an unwavering commitment to enhancing the quality of life through sport, recreation and culture across the region.”

Her vision includes strengthening community connections, innovating service delivery and working closely with the board of directors to ensure the Lakeland District continues to be a vibrant hub for sport, recreation and cultural development, the release said.

“I am incredibly honoured and excited to take on this new role,” Meekins said. “We are at a moment of great potential, and by building on our strong foundation and embracing fresh ideas, I believe we can drive meaningful change and create even more opportunities for people of all ages to be active, creative and connected.”

The Lakeland District for Sport, Culture and Recreation supports the development and delivery of sport, recreation and cultural opportunities throughout central and northeastern Saskatchewan. Through advocacy, education and partnership-building, the organization promotes healthy, vibrant communities.
