Volleyball, future careers, travel club, choir keep students busy

The senior girls' volleyball team travelled to Wilkie Nov. 2 for their conference playoffs. The girls fought for every point and finished the tournament in third place. Unfortunately, they had to finish in the top two in order to advance to regionals. We thank Marsha Bzdel and Michelle Nelson for the time they devoted to coaching the girls this year.

The Grades 11 and 12 classes went to Saskatoon to attend See Your Future at TCU Place, Nov. 5. This was a great opportunity for students to learn about future careers.

The travel club is starting to get things organized for their upcoming trip. The club will travel in April of 2014. Their destinations are Switzerland, Austria and Germany. There are 13 students planning to go on the trip as well as three staff members and one extra chaperone. Some of the sights they will be visiting are Vienna, Mozart's birthplace in Salzburg, Mount Pilatus in Lucerne and the Black Forest and Heidelberg in Germany. They are going to be away for 10 days, unless they do an extension. Susan Thompson is the organizer of the trip.

Our annual Remembrance Day service will begin about 10:45 a.m., Nov. 8. The school choir, made up of students in Grades 2, 3, 4 and 5, will be singing two songs. Sharon Farnell will be the guest speaker. Community members and students will be laying wreaths to honour people lost in wars. The Grade 12 class will hold a chili and bun sale following the service.

The school will participate in Operation Christmas Child. Each classroom will collect small toys, school supplies and clothing to fill shoeboxes. These boxes will be sent to needy children in other countries. These items will be collected in November.

Our annual book fair will be held between Nov. 18 and Nov. 22. It is a great opportunity to purchase some new books and maybe even some Christmas presents. This will coincide with interviews Nov. 20 and 21.

Our SLC has been very active this year. They are having a Jersey Day Nov. 14. Let's hope there will be lots of Roughrider jerseys as they make their way to the Grey Cup. Thanks also to the SLC for making and running the haunted house on Halloween day. I heard it was pretty scary.

Our sympathies are extended to Krista and Ryan Nickell on the passing of Krista's grandmother, Mrs. Shirley Meena. Also our thoughts are with a former colleague, Doug Sevick, and his family on the passing of Doug's mother, Grace Sevick.

The school's annual Christmas concert will be held Dec. 17. Please mark your calendars for this event. Everyone is welcome to attend.
