LA RONGE - A resident of a northern Saskatchewan town says he's doing what he can to help people flee an encroaching wildfire.
La Ronge local Terry Ross says most of the town's 2,500 residents have left after public safety officials ordered the evacuation on Monday.
Ross says despite the thick, smoky air and strong winds, the evacuation so far has been smooth.
He says he plans to meet up later in the day with his children, who left La Ronge on Monday and are now safe in Saskatoon.
The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency issued an evacuation order for La Ronge, Air Ronge and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band after a wildfire breached the town's airport.
The out-of-control fire was fast-moving and was listed at more than 836 square kilometres in size as of Monday night.
The agency says an outage was affecting internet, cellphone and landline phone services near La Ronge.
Air quality alerts have also been issued for parts of Saskatchewan due to the fires.
