The sun is still hot and the beaches are still open, but that didn't stop kids from Humboldt and area from heading out to the Uniplex last week for Broncos hockey school on Aug. 25-28.
Young athletes about six to 11 years old congregated on the ice to learn shooting, skating, passing, and puck handling. The last day was a review of what they learned and a scrimmage.
"Obviously I hope they learn a few skills, but I like to make sure that they have a good time and make some new friends," said Brayden Klimosko, assistant coach for the Broncos.
This year is the third for the hockey school and Klimosko said it has been gaining entries every year. Six Broncos players served as coaches, either teaching the kids new skills or chasing them on the ice and picking them up.
Kids attended the hockey school from Strasbourg, Wynyard, Warman, Humboldt and area and Quill Lake.
"It's a pretty big area," he said.
Most of the young athletes attending play on hockey teams during the season, but the school also accepts beginners. The school is basically for anyone who wants to learn skills and have fun.
While the attendees were overwhelmingly male, a few girls were also present.
"To be honest, every year there have been more and more girls," Klimosko said. "It's kind of cool to see. They definitely are fitting in really well ... which is kind of nice to see."
Klimosko's favourite part of the camp is getting to work with the kids and see their development over the course of the four days.
"I like seeing the smiles on their faces for sure," he said. "The development from the first day on Monday to Thursday is pretty remarkable. It is kind of nice to see that."
