Bump and set for provincials

It was a busy weekend of volleyball across the province and this weekend will be more of the same.

For some divisions this is provincial weekend, which would have been the ultimate goal for many teams, for others they have one step left to go before provincials, as they play in regionals this weekend.

On the weekend, John Paul II hosted five other teams for 5A girls' north regional playoffs. Unfortunately the young John Paul II team finished third in their pool after the round robin and were eliminated from the playoffs by P.A. St. Mary's. North Battleford Comprehensive High School suffered the same fate and were eliminated by the other Prince Albert team from Carlton High School and had their promising season come to an end. Meadow Lake took first place in a good three-set game against Carlton, as both teams will be in Prince Albert this weekend for provincials.

At the 5A boys' level, NBCHS went 0-2 in their round robin and lost out in the quarter finals of the north regional playoffs, but they will still be at provincials this weekend as the host team. The action begins at NBCHS at 1 p.m. Friday with 10 teams competing for the provincial championship.

Unity is one of six teams playing Biggar this weekend in the 4A boys' north regional championship with the top two teams advancing to provincials in Nipawin next weekend.

Unity failed to make the playoffs at the 4A girls' north regional tournament on the weekend and missed the chance to advance to provincials this weekend in Regina.

Neilburg will host 3A boys' west regionals this weekend and joining the host team will be Maidstone, who are hosting provincials next weekend other teams are Minahik Waskahigan, Wilkie, Turtleford and Lashburn.

St. Walburg will represent the Northwest at 3A girls' regionals in Outlook this weekend after earning silver at the north regional championship last weekend in Rossignol and Waldheim.

Luseland was one of the teams to advance from the 2A boys' west regional conference playoffs in Cut Knife on the weekend. Luseland is now one of six teams playing in the west regional playoffs in Langham this weekend.

In one of the 2A boys' north conference playoffs last weekend, Paradise Hill hosted and were able to advance to regionals this weekend in Goodsoil after three teams tied with a record of 2-1.

Edam will be playing in the other round robin in Goodsoil this weekend looking to advance to provincials.

Edam will compete for the 2A girls' provincial title this weekend in Wakaw and Cudworth after winning regionals at Chief Napew Memorial School last weekend. Edam and Maymont went head-to-head in the regional final with both teams earning a spot in the provincial tournament. At regionals, Edam won the first set 25-23, lost the second set 25-19 and won the third set 25-22.

Medstead will host the 1A boys' provincial championship Nov. 23 and 24 and will be guaranteed to play in the provincial tournament. This weekend they will play in Perdue in a pool with the host team and Glaslyn. Borden will also be competing at the six-team north regional championship vying for a spot at provincials.

Medstead and Borden both competed in the 1A girls' north regional playoffs on the weekend and failed to advance to provincials after finishing 2-2 and 0-4 respectively in the round robin.
