Cando are provincial bound once again

Cando travels to Moose Jaw this weekend after taking first place in the boys 7 versus 7 regional playoffs held in North Battleford on the weekend.

It was not the most favourable soccer conditions as the teams played in snowy, slippery conditions all weekend and inches of snow made it difficult to control the ball.

Cando first beat Rosthern Junior College 9-1 thanks to a high tempo game and good ball control.

That win advanced Cando to the final against Stobart, as both teams knew they qualified for provincials before the final game. In the difficult conditions, Cando earned the 3-1 win over Stobart.

Maymont also competed in the 7 versus 7 regional playoffs in North Battleford, but were eliminated by Rosthern by a 5-2 score.

Stobart and Cando will compete with Moose Jaw Riverview and Regina Laval for the provincial championship.

The Cando girls' team failed to qualify for provincials, as they competed in Outlook for their regional playoffs. Cando lost to the team from Constable Robin Cameron, who went on to win the regional tournament.

At the 1A boys' regional playoff in Prince Albert, Chief Poundmaker came up short in the semifinal against Middle Lake. The teams were tied 1-1 at half time, as Jeremy Stone scored for Poundmaker. Middle Lake scored late in the second half to secure the win.

Thunderchild also competed in Prince Albert, but lost in semifinal as well. Thunderchild beat Sturgeon Lake before losing to Se Se Wa Hum, the eventual regional champions.

Chief Poundmakers' girls' team lost 9-4 to Rosthern Junior College in the 1A girls' semifinal in Rosthern Friday and failed to qualify for provincials.

At the 2A level, John Paul II's boys' team was in Saskatoon for regional playoffs. The Crusaders faced Aden Bowman and lost 3-1. Dominik Keteles was the lone goal scorer for John Paul II.

Aden Bowman's and Evan Hardy's teams advanced from the regional playoff.

John Paul II's girls also failed to advance to provincials. They played in Lloydminster and lost 6-1 to the host Holy Rosary team.

In the 3A girls' regional playoff in North Battleford, the North Battleford Comprehensive High School Vikings failed to advance to provincials. The Vikings lost to P.A. St. Mary. St. Mary then lost in the final to P.A. Carlton.
