The Edam Ladies fought off a late rally by the Battleford Bantam Bandits and went home with a 14-13 victory in Battlefords Ladies' Fastball League action Monday night.
Edam dominated early, piling on the runs in the first few innings. The Bandits weren't to be outdone, as they saved their offence for the end.
Both teams had the bats working all night, but the Ladies did a better job capitalizing. In the fifth and sixth innings the Bandits were putting on a ton of pressure and possibly would have won the game had it not been for the strong defensive play of Edam catcher Brittany Penner. In the fifth she threw out back-to-back base runners attempting to steal second, then followed it up with a diving catch in the sixth.
The Ladies were also forced to soldier on with only eight players for much of the game after their starting pitcher went down with a knee injury.
Battleford came out in the seventh inning and gave it their all for the comeback, bringing it to within one run after a bases loaded hit. With runners still on first and second, the Bandits grounded out to end the game.
Next Monday the format will be changed, as there will be two five inning games rather than one seven inning game before going back to the regular format the following Wednesday.
