March 14 1960 - Philadelphia's Wilt Chamberlain sets a National Basketball Association playoff record with 53 points. 1962 - Gordie Howe becomes the second National Hockey League player to scored 500 goals in his career.

1960 - Philadelphia's Wilt Chamberlain sets a National Basketball Association playoff record with 53 points.

1962 - Gordie Howe becomes the second National Hockey League player to scored 500 goals in his career. He did so wearing the number nine for the Detroit Red Wings. Howe signed an American Hockey League contract at the age of 68 with the Syracuse crunch exactly 33 years later.

March 15

1912 - Famous Major League Baseball pitcher Cy Young retires with 511 wins.

1997 - Joe Mullen of the Pittsburgh Penguins becomes the first American-born hockey player to scored 500 goals in the NHL.

March 16

1957 - Toronto Maple Leafs tie an NHL record by scoring 37 points in one game. The Leafs beat the New York Rangers 14-1.

1991 - New Jersey Nets coach Bill Fitch wins 800th National Basketball Association game. He becomes the fourth coach in league history to do so.

March 17

1908 - Tommy Burns knocks out Jem Roche for the quickest win in heavyweight boxing history. Burns earned the KO 88 seconds into the first round.

1996 - The new Montreal Canadiens' arena opens with the name Molson Centre. The Molson Centre name was changed to the Bell Centre in 2002. The arena holds 21,273 fans.

1892 - Lord Stanley presents the new silver challenge cup for hockey. The Montreal Amateur Athletic Association was the first team to win the cup. The NHL took possession of the Stanley Cup in 1910.

1945 - Maurice the Rocket Richard becomes the first NHL player to score 50 goals in a season. He did so playing 50 games during that season. The legendary Montreal Canadien scored 544 goals in 16 NHL seasons.

1990 - The 32-day long MLB strike ends.

1995 - Michael Jordan announces his is ending his 17-month NBA retirement and would lead the Chicago Bulls to three more NBA championships.

March 19

1975 - Pennsylvania is the first state to permit girls to compete with boys in high school sports.

1991 - National Football League owners strip Phoenix of the 1993 Super Bowl due to Arizona not recognizing Martin Luther King Day.

March 20

1989 - MLB announces that Cincinnati Reds manager Pete Rose is under investigation.
