Settlers streak into second place in SPHL

The Maymont Settlers are one of the hottest teams in the SPHL. The Settlers stretched their winning streak to six games with wins last weekend over the Perdue Pirates and the Glaslyn North Stars.

The Settlers stretched their winning streak to six games with wins last weekend over the Perdue Pirates and the Glaslyn North Stars.

Maymont edged the Pirates 5-4 in overtime in Maymont Friday night. Michael Pylypow led the Settlers' offence with two goals and an assist. Tyler Hubbard and Kyle Litchenwald each had a goal and two assists. The Pirates were paced by Chad Weir's two goals and an assist. Matt Poitras and Keaton Silvernagle both scored for Perdue. Garret Poletz left his mark on the game by registering an assist on all four of Perdue's goals.

The Settlers returned home and blew out the North Stars 9-1 Saturday night. Chad Bernier, Kinley Sevick and Brennan Strain had two goals each in the win. Hubbard, Litchenwald and Vince Sauvie also lit the lamp for the Settlers. Jason Nash scored the lone goal for the Pirates.

The Cut Knife Colts are also streaking with nine straight wins. Their ninth came in a 9-3 romp over the Meota Combines Saturday night. Jordan Noble led the way with two goals and a pair of assists. Kenton Albert, Riley Albert, Bye Braun, Ryan Constant, Gino Frank, Ashton Hewson and Darbie Koshman all found the back of the net in the Colts' win. Bo Gervais, Sean Kenny and Brett Miller were Meota's goal scorers.

In other SPHL action, the Shellbrook Silvertips won a wild 9-7 game over the Mustangs in Hafford Friday night. Devin Dicus, Jason McComas and Devon Thorpe each scored twice for the Silvertips in the win. Kyle Brataschuk, Nathanial Martin and Brett Mason also put the puck in the net for Shellbrook. The Mustangs were led by Justin Babiy and Ryan Schafer with two goals each. Andrew Galambos, Kyle Rivett and Mathew Scott got on the score sheet for Hafford.

Also Friday night, the Spiritwood Timberwolves needed overtime to down the Radisson Wheatkings 4-3. Bryce Gatzke, Shane Gopher, Raymon Harris and Raymond Witchekan were the goal scorers for Spiritwood. The Wheakings received goals from Dana Derbowka, Shaun Rose and Brad Wanner.

The Timberwolves went to overtime again Saturday night, beating the Mustangs 7-6 in Hafford. Witchekan scored twice and added three assists to pace Spiritwood's offence. Gopher, Harris, Tyler Gamble and Colton Poulin rounded out the goal scoring for the Timberwolves. Rivett led the way with two goals for the Mustangs. Babiy, Galambos, Schafer and Cody Ryan also scored for Hafford.

With their winning streak, Cut Knife (14-2) has been able to hold onto the top spot in the SPHL. Maymont (12-3), Shellbrook (12-5) and Battleford (11-3-2) are tied for second with 24 points, four behind the Colts. Meota (8-8) and Spiritwood (8-8) are tied for fifth with 16 points. Radisson (5-9-2) is alone in seventh with 12 points. Glaslyn (4-11-1), Hafford (3-11-2) and Perdue (3-12-1) round out the bottom three of the league.

The upcoming weekend features the last regular season games of the SPHL. Friday night sees Perdue travel Radisson to face off at 8 p.m. The Combines host the Timberwolves in North Battleford also Friday night. Puck drop is 8:30 p.m.

There are three games Saturday night. Hafford visits Maymont, Battleford welcomes Spiritwood into town and the North Stars and the Silvertips play in Glaslyn. All of Saturday's games start at 8 p.m.

The final game of the regular season is Sunday afternoon in Maymont. The Settlers host the Cut Knife Colts for a 2 p.m. puck drop.
