SIRT investigating police-involved non-fatal shooting

At about 12:30 p.m. on May 28, officers located a dark-coloured SUV, which matched a description of the suspect vehicle, near Crutwell.

CANWOOD - Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) have been notified after a non-fatal officer-involved shooting.

On May 28, Saskatchewan RCMP officers with the Prince Albert Warrant Enforcement and Suppression Team (WEST) and Crime Reduction Team (CRT), Police Dog Services (PDS), Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan (CTSS), Critical Incident Response Team, and Ahtahkakoop, Prince Albert, Meadow Lake, Big River, and Spiritwood Detachments were working to locate and apprehend two suspects with multiple outstanding warrants for firearms-related offences.

At approximately 12:30 p.m., officers located a dark-coloured SUV, which matched a description of the suspect vehicle, near Crutwell.

Officers activated emergency equipment on their vehicles and attempted a traffic stop. The SUV did not stop and fled from police. Officers pursued the SUV and attempted to bring the SUV to a stop using a spike belt.

The SUV drove off the road and into a field approximately 10 km east of Canwood. The SUV then drove into a washout in the field and stopped. 

As officers approached the SUV, the male driver exited with a firearm; a confrontation occurred. The officer discharged their firearm, striking the male in the arm. Officers located a female passenger in the SUV.

Officers provided initial medical care. EMS attended and transported the male and female to hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. No officers reported physical injuries.

The male and female were arrested on outstanding warrants.  

A 32-year-old man was arrested on warrants from Melfort RCMP and Île-à-la-Crosse RCMP for multiple offences, including firearms and weapons charges.

A 30-year-old woman, from Peter Chapman Band, was arrested on a warrant from Melfort RCMP for firearms offences. Additionally, she has been charged with robbery and weapons offences in relation to a robbery and firearms incident 

A firearm was recovered at the scene. Saskatchewan RCMP Provincial General Investigation Section (GIS) continues to investigate this incident. Charges have not yet been laid in relation to this incident.

As required by The Police Act, 1990, Saskatchewan RCMP notified the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT). SIRT will investigate the circumstances of this officer-involved shooting.
