Suspect allegedly set fire in ditch

Nipawin/Smeaton RCMP received a report of a small fire in the ditch beside Highway 55, near the turnoff to Snowdon.

SNOWDON - Police are investigating after a man allegedly set a fire in a ditch beside Highway 55.

On June 3 at approximately 1:30 a.m., Nipawin/Smeaton RCMP received a report of a small fire in the ditch beside Highway 55, near the turnoff to Snowdon.

Officers responded.

Investigation determined a male started the fire, which was extinguished by the Smeaton Fire Department.

A man was arrested at the scene.

As a result of continued investigation, a 36-year-old man from Pelican Narrows is charged with one count, arson.

He is scheduled to next appear in Nipawin Provincial Court on June 11.

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency is assisting in this investigation.

This incident has not impacted the major wildfires in the north.
