RCMP investigating suspicious death of child on Shoal Lake Cree

A child under 10 was found dead in a home on Shoal Lake Cree Nation Friday evening, prompting a homicide investigation by RCMP Major Crimes.

SHOAL LAKE CREE NATION — Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes is investigating the suspicious death of a young child on Shoal Lake Cree Nation.

At approximately 7 p.m. on May 23, Carrot River RCMP received a report that a child under the age of 10 had been seriously injured at a residence on the First Nation.

Officers responded immediately and found an unresponsive child inside the home. Life-saving efforts were attempted, but the child was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.

RCMP have deemed the death suspicious and have taken over the investigation. A suspect has been identified and is currently in custody.

Police say the suspect and the child were known to each other and that there is no elevated risk to public safety.
