Liverman is a leader in climate change vulnerability and adaptation research, and more broadly in the human dimensions of global environmental change with special focus on implications for policy, governance and equity issues. She is a leader in mobilizing interdisciplinary science to link science, policymakers, and stakeholders, and was a lead author for the 2018 IPCC report on 1.5áµ’C warming. Her early research was at the forefront of combining climate models, crop simulations and food system models to address agriculture and food vulnerability, combined with field research in Mexico to further understand food system vulnerability to drought and climate change. Her work has also examined carbon offsets, planetary boundaries, and climate adaptation policy. Her research has been integrated into multiple assessments, policies and programs addressing human dimensions and impacts of climate change.
