                    As dean and academic leader, he led the Feinberg School of Medicine through a period of unprecedented scientific growth. An advocate for superb scholarship and clinical excellence, he has expertise in modernizing medical education, remodeling complex health care organizations, building research programs, cultivating careers for women in medicine, and successfully adapting health system finances and workforce to an ever-changing environment. As a scientist, he described a new origin for fibroblasts, showing they can derive from epithelial or endothelial-mesenchymal transition, a notion that reshapes how we think about the role of cellular plasticity in cancer, renal fibrosis, and cardiovascular disease.
