                    His most recent novel, The Night Inspector (1999) is a remarkable work.  Read in conjunction with its immediate predecessor, Girls (1997), it brings his achievement in fiction to notable focus.  He has been publishing fiction since 1971:  novels and short stories.  He has won the PEN/Malamud Award for achievement in the short story and the Award of Merit of the Âé¶¹´«Ã½AV of Arts and Letters for a lifetime's achievement in the short story.  He has twice been a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner and was a finalist for the National Book Critics' Circle Award.  He has won the National Jewish Book Award and several fellowships -- Woodrow Wilson, NEQ, James Merrill, and Guggenheim.
