Leading Modernist critic, theorist, editor and translator, especially known for analyses-part formalist, part psychoanalytical-of  James Joyce, Ezra Pound, and Samuel Beckett. Actively involved in contemporary discussions of art and theory as a founder and senior curator of the Slought Foundation. Held many fellowships and named lectureships both in the U.S. and abroad.
