University Professor, Professor of English and President Emeritus of the University of Virginia. President, 1990-2010. Since 1990, made significant improvements in Virginia's academic programs, given increased attention to undergraduate teaching and research at all levels, achieved success in educating minority students and refinanced the university despite reductions in state support.
