                    Research in ethnomusicology and cross-cultural musical studies. She has written on musics of Ethiopia and the Middle East, as well as a wide range of musics in North America. Her current work concerns new approaches to musical diversity that cut across conventional musical repertories and categories. She has investigated boundaries between cultural and cognitive studies in music and has been active in national cultural affairs. Currently, she is writing a book on musicians of the global diaspora from the Horn of Africa.
