William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Politics. Contributed to public law, constitutional theory, and American Political Development. Through his scholarship, increased understanding of the proper sphere of orginalist constitutional interpretation, the political construction of constitutional principles, and the history of political conflict over constitutional meaning. The impact of this work established him as a leading scholar of the U.S. Constitution in political science. Author of three books: Constitutional Construction: Divided Powers and Constitutional Meaning (1999), Constitutional Interpretation: Textual Meaning, Original Intent, and Judicial Review (1999), and Political Foundations of Judicial Supremacy: The Presidency, the Supreme Court, and Constitutional Leadership in U.S. History (2007). The most recent book was the recipient of the C. Herman Pritchett Award for best book in law and courts and the J. David Greenstone Award for best book in politics and history. Forthcoming books include American Political Thought: Readings and Materials, and Repugnant Laws: Judicial Review of Acts of Congress from the Founding to the Present.
