                    Following fieldwork in Afghanistan (1967-72) and the first book on its music, Slobin did major studies of Eastern European Jewish music (topics: immigrants, cantors, klezmers), global film music, theory of ethnomusicology (best known for "Subcultural Sounds") and, currently, his hometown Detroit. Two of his nearly 20 book projects received the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award for writing excellence. He served as President of the Society for Ethnomusicology and Society for Asian Music.
