Prof. Hentze is distinguished for his pioneering research over almost three decades on RNA-binding proteins, mechanisms of translational control, and their implications in human disease. He is recognized as a world leader in this area and is equally known for his community-oriented service and scientific leadership as EMBL Director, institutional advisor, editorial board member and conference organizer. His recent work has lead to the discovery of hundreds of new RNA-binding proteins, including enzymes of intermediary metabolism. These demonstrate that coding and non-coding RNAs control protein function in numerous biological processes and foreshadows a new phase in understanding functional genome-metabolism interactions.
