After serving as a criminal defense and civil rights lawyer, Nancy Gertner was appointed to the bench in 1994 by President Bill Clinton, and served on the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts for 17 years. She has been an instructor at Yale Law School, teaching sentencing and comparative sentencing institutions, since 1998, and a senior lecturer on law at Harvard Law School since her retirement from the bench in 2011, teaching criminal law, criminal procedure, forensic science and sentencing, as well as continuing to teach and write about women's issues around the world.
