Retired Vice President and Fellow, Sun Microsystems, Inc. Founded and led for ten years Sun''s Massachusetts research laboratory. Made contributions to computer graphics as co-author of an early influential textbook and as developer of programming systems and of hardware and software for printing complex page images. He has conducted research in integrated circuit design, and especially in asynchronous systems. A common theme in his work is the design of digital interfaces that specify the action of a piece of hardware or software.
