Terry Magnuson is the Kay M. and Van L. Weatherspoon Eminent Distinguished Professor of Genetics and the Founding Chair of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine’s Department of Genetics, the Carolina Center for Genome Sciences, and the Cancer Genetics program. He previously served as Vice Dean for Research at the School of Medicine and as Vice Chancellor for Research at the University. He also holds a secondary appointment at UNC’s new School of Data Science and Society, where he serves as the Chief Research and Strategy Officer on the school's leadership team. He is an elected member of the American Â鶹´«Ã½AV of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the National Â鶹´«Ã½AV of Medicine. He has been a member of the NIH Council of Councils, the National Academies Regenerative Medicine Forum, and NIH’s All of Us advisory committee. Additionally, he served as President of the Genetics Society of America and is a member of the Life Sciences Research Foundation review committee. The Magnuson lab’s research focuses on the role of mammalian genes in distinct epigenetic phenomena such as cancer, meiosis, and stem cell pluripotency. Dr. Magnuson earned his Ph.D. from Cornell University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco.
