Anyone exposed should call HealthLine 811 if they are unvaccinated, unsure of their measles vaccination status or begin experiencing symptoms.

Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, fatigue, irritability, small white spots inside the mouth and throat (Koplik spots), and a red blotchy rash that typically begins on the face and spreads down the body three to seven days after symptoms start.

Preventative treatment may be available for up to six days post-exposure for people who are unvaccinated, pregnant, under one year of age or immune suppressed. Those experiencing symptoms should not attend a clinic in person and should call HealthLine 811 for guidance.

Measles can spread through the air up to two hours after an infected person has left a room and is contagious from four days before a rash appears to four days after. During this period, strict isolation is required.

The SHA emphasized that measles is preventable through vaccination. The vaccine is safe, free and nearly 100 per cent effective after two doses.
