SASKATOON - A 14-year-old girl accused of allegedly setting a fellow student on fire in a Saskatoon school was back in court on May 1.

Crown Prosecutor Ainsley Furlonger confirmed the case, which was heard in the Court of King's Bench in Saskatoon on May 1, is now proceeding through direct indictment, as filed by the Crown, so it will be able to go directly to trial without the need for a preliminary hearing first.

As a result, a preliminary hearing originally ordered for July at Saskatoon Provincial Court has now been cancelled.

The girl, accused of allegedly lighting another student on fire on Sept. 5, 2024, at Evan Hardy Collegiate, is facing charges of attempted murder, unlawfully causing bodily harm, aggravated assault and arson.

The accused previously elected for a judge-alone trial at the Court of King's Bench in Saskatoon.

The dates for the trial are still to be set.
