Pancake breakfast goers 'pay it forward'

Pancakes, coffee, and live entertainment.

SASKATOON—Hundreds braved the early morning drizzle on Thursday, June 19, for the 49th Annual Civic Pancake Breakfast, a fundraising event where all proceeds go to United Way Saskatoon.

Various performers entertained the crowd, including Indigenous singers, bands, and a Ukrainian dancer, as they enjoyed freshly made pancakes topped with their choice of fruit and sausages, accompanied by hot coffee, in tents set up on 23rd Street and 4th Avenue.

The fundraising event again featured the Act of Kindness Breakfast, where attendees could purchase a hot meal for someone in need. And with the city experiencing a surge in homelessness, the endeavour is much appreciated.

Lily, one of the volunteers, said that several people purchased tickets for the Act of Kindness Breakfast, with one gentleman, who wishes to remain anonymous, buying 11 tickets that were distributed to those in need of a hot meal.

Chantel, not her real name, who was one of the recipients, said she was pleased by the kind gesture, as she and some of her friends enjoyed the hot breakfast.

“Events like this are good for the community. It brings everyone together where we can enjoy each other's company, and get to know other people while enjoying a meal,” she said.

She added that the fundraising event is one of the many projects undertaken by various organizations in the city to assist community members in need.

That is why she is also doing her share in keeping the city clean by picking up trash and garbage that she sees on the streets.

The Saskatoon Police Service’s armoured vehicle, the Mobile Command Centre of the Saskatoon Fire Department, and the latest electric bus by the Saskatoon Transit were also on display.

There were also various information booths, such as the city’s waste segregation program, where garbage goes in the black bin, the blue bin is for recycling, and the green bin is for compost.
