Red/orange powder sold as fentanyl in Saskatoon tests positive for multiple dangerous substances.

SASKATOON — The Saskatchewan Ministry of Health has issued a drug and overdose alert for Saskatoon after a sample of red/orange powder sold as fentanyl tested positive for high concentrations of fentanyl, benzodiazepines and xylazine.

The sample was tested at Prairie Harm Reduction in Saskatoon and contained 10 to 25 per cent fentanyl, combined with benzodiazepines and xylazine — a sedative not reversed by naloxone (narcan). While naloxone can temporarily counteract fentanyl’s effects, it does not address sedation caused by xylazine or benzodiazepines.

Health officials warn that using illegally acquired drugs carries significant risks, including overdose and death. They recommend obtaining a Take Home Naloxone Kit by calling HealthLine 811, and urge people using drugs alone to call the National Overdose Response Service at 1-888-688-NORS (6677).

The Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act offers legal protection to those seeking emergency help during an overdose.
