During the week of Jan. 14-21, the Weyburn Police Service responded to 106 calls for service.
The Weyburn Organized Crime Unit and the Weyburn Police Service executed a search warrant on a 26-year-old Weyburn male's residence on Jan. 16. Police seized 5.5 ounces of cocaine with an estimated street value of over $15,000. A snowmobile located was also determined to have been stolen.
The 26-year-old male was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime. The accused will make his first court appearance in March.
City police received a complaint of a sexual assault on Sunday. The people were known to each other. The 26-year-old female was examined at the Weyburn General Hospital and released. A 30-year-old male was arrested and charged with sexual assault and assault causing bodily harm. He will be making a court appearance on Feb. 19 in Weyburn.
The city police received a report that an apartment had been damaged while the residents were out on Jan. 15. Subsequent investigation showed that the residents left the apartment occupied by some friends. These friends then got into a fight, damaging the apartment. Alcohol was a contributing factor.
The police responded to a two-vehicle collision at First Avenue and Government Road on Jan. 15. A 38-year-old woman was charged with disobeying a red light.
On Jan. 14, the police received a call regarding a semi that was being driven erratically on Highway 39. The vehicle was located and the driver spoken to.
City police conducted a traffic enforcement operation on Jan. 17, targeting obscured windshields. A total of five tickets were issued. Police would like to remind motorists that the windshield and side windows have to be clear of all obstructions; this particularly means ones that are frosted over or not properly cleared of snow.
The police received a complaint of an 18-year-old male who was expressing suicidal thoughts on Jan. 17. The person was taken to the hospital to be assessed and has had no further contact with the police.
On Jan. 18, the city police responded to a report of a break-and-enter to a garage where items were missing. The matter is still under investigation.
Police received a report of a stolen vehicle on Jan. 18. The vehicle was subsequently located in Estevan. Investigation revealed that the incident was likely sparked by a domestic situation. As a result of the complainant's actions, a 25-year-old male was arrested and lodged in cells for public intoxication. No charges will be laid.
On Sunday, the city police were called to assist Weyburn EMS at a local bar. A 25-year-old intoxicated male had fallen injuring himself.
The police also responded to 11 reports of minor hit-and-run collisions. Drivers are reminded that if you are involved in a collision of any sort you must at the very least leave your name and licence number with the vehicle you struck.
Failure to do so can result in a traffic ticket being issued, or in certain cases a criminal charge being laid.
With the large amount of snow the city has received, the Weyburn Police Service are receiving a corresponding number of complaints about snowmobiles operating within city limits. With a couple of exceptions along the Highway 39 corridor and Highway 13 corridor at the east end of the city, snowmobiles are only allowed on the river.
