There were no classes scheduled at Â鶹´«Ã½AVeast Regional College's King Street campus this past week. In fact, the halls are lined with boxes and furniture, ready to be moved to the Weyburn City Centre Mall, where classes and regular College business will resume on January 2, 2013.
The College will occupy over 16,000 square feet of mall space formerly used by Fields, V&S, and a flower shop, as well as the former pet shop space the College began leasing last fall.
"Our Electrician, Hairstylist and Practical Nursing students have been attending classes at the mall campus since the beginning of the Fall semester," said Leslie Looker, Weyburn Campus Manager of Â鶹´«Ã½AVeast Regional College. "The biggest part of the move is happening this week and it will be exciting to have everyone working together in one location again."
The College's mall location will include eight classrooms, as well as the Information Technology, Registrations, Student Services and Campus Services teams.
One other temporary location, St. Dominic School, was considered in addition to the mall. However, after reviewing its options with the Ministry of Advanced Education, it was deemed that the mall was the most functional and cost effective option for the College.
The move is a result of the Weyburn Comprehensive School and Â鶹´«Ã½AVeast Cornerstone School Division's high school renewal project. The King Street location, which the College currently leases from the school division, is slated for demolition. This has required the College to find temporary space in the mall for its Weyburn campus. The College's administration offices will still remain at the corner of Fourth Street and Railway Avenue.
"It's a bit confusing, but once the demolition is complete at the King Street location, construction will begin on a new Â鶹´«Ã½AVeast Regional College facility very near that same location," explained Dave Harazny, Marketing Manager for Â鶹´«Ã½AVeast Regional College. "And after that new facility is complete, the College's mall campus and Fourth Street administration offices will move back together under one roof."
This move to Weyburn's City Centre Mall is a change of location and will not affect College programs or services. For a complete list of courses available at Â鶹´«Ã½AVeast Regional College and the Saskatchewan Energy Training Institute, please visit southeastcollege.org.
