Phase 1 of COVID-19 immunization delivery plan to begin next week

Anearlyholidaygiftwillsoonbe onitswaytoSaskatchewanasanothershipmentof thePfizerBioNTechvaccineisexpectedtoarriveinSaskatoonnextweek,asearlyasDecember21.

ThefirststepofPhase1of theVaccineDeliveryPlan willbebeginnextweekas1,950health careworkersinSaskatoonICUs, EmergencyDepartments,CovidUnits, testing andassessmentcentreswillreceivetheir initialdoseof thevaccineatMerlisBelcher Placeat theUniversityofSaskatchewan.Recipientswillreceivetheirsecond dosethreetofourweekslater.

“Saskatchewanhasbeen readytoreceiveand waitingtodelivertheCOVID-19vaccine,asIsaid lastweek,” Health Minister PaulMerrimansaid.“So itwaswelcomenews whenwelearnedthatthe firstshipmentwouldarrivebeforetheholidays.Iconsiderthis thebestgifttoseemorehealth careworkersinourprovince beingimmunized,and lookforwardtodeliveringit tomoreof thepeopleathighestrisk.”

Phase1ofSaskatchewan’sVaccineDeliveryPlanfocusesonimmunizingprioritypopulations whoareatahigherrisk ofexposuretothevirusaswellasthosemoreat risk ofseriousillness.Thisincludeshealth careworkers,staff andresidentsoflong-termcare facilities, thoseinthe 80plusrange, residents over50innorthernandremoteareasandas thesupplyofvaccine allows,those70to79yearsofage.

Inaddition,theimmunizationpilotinReginaisexpandingtoincludemorehealth careprofessionals.Thepilot,which includes 1,950health careworkers,will nowexpandtokey frontline staffintheSaskatchewanCancerAgency, EmergencyMedical Services(EMS)andanesthetists.Additionalprioritygroupsarebeing considered dependingonuptake.

SinceTuesday 250people have receivedthe firstdoseof thePfizervaccine(11onDecember15and 239onDecember16).Thereare 301people bookedtoreceivethevaccine today.

“Theseadditional groups have beenidentified given they are alsoathigher-riskofcontractingCOVID-19,andbecauseoftheirworkwith at-riskpatients,” SHA CEO Scott Livingstonesaid.“Ofcourse,oursuppliesarelimited,sowe will looktocontinue providing additional dosestothesegroupsasmorevaccineisreceived.”

Officials are usinglessons learnedinthepilotfor thelogisticsoftransporting,storing and distributingthevaccine. HealthCanadaapprovalof theModernavaccineisexpectedsoon, whichcouldmeanashipmenttoSaskatchewanlaterthismonth.TheModernavaccinecanbestoredinregulartemperature freezerswhichwillmakeiteasiertotransporttoand useinsmaller,ruralcentres.

Widespreadvaccine accesstobeginimmunizationof thegeneral populationwillbepartofPhase2of thedeliveryplan, tentativelybeginninginApril2021, whichiswhyit iscriticalfor allSaskatchewanresidentstocontinue followingpublic healthordersandmeasureswhilethevaccination programisdelivered.
