During the week of Dec. 30 to Jan. 5, the Weyburn Police Service attended to 65 calls for service.
Police responded to a complaint of an individual who was being threatened by a male with a gun on Jan. 2. The complainant reported they were being chased by a car and one of the occupants was pointing and shooting at them with a BB gun. As a result of the investigation, a 19-year-old Weyburn male was arrested and charged with assault with a weapon, dangerous driving and using a weapon in the commission of an offence, and will be appearing in court in February.
A complaint of a hit and run was received on Dec. 30 after a vehicle that had been parked in the 500 block of McGillivray Drive was damaged. The vehicle was hit by another vehicle sometime between the 28th and 30th of December. The incident remains under investigation.
On Dec. 31, the Weyburn Police Service received a complaint of a hit-and-run which had occurred in the Real Canadian Wholesale Club parking lot. The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
On Dec. 31, police attended a two-vehicle motor vehicle accident at Fifth Street and Souris Avenue after one of the drivers proceeded before it was safe into the intersection. No injuries were reported, although damages were serious enough to require one vehicle to be towed from the scene. One driver was charged with proceed from the stop sign before it was safe to do so.
A fraud complaint was received on Dec. 31 of an individual receiving a cheque for over $3,000 and an accompanying letter advising the individual they had been selected as a secret shopper.
The letter advised the individual they were to wire money to an account and then keep the remaining amount for doing secret shopping. The complainant was concerned that this maybe a scam and contacted the police prior to sending any money.
On Jan. 3, another fraud complaint was received of an individual who had received a similar cheque and letter requesting to be a secret shopper as had been reported on Dec. 31.
Unfortunately in this case the individual did wire some money before finding out that this was a fraud. The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
As part of a New Year's Eve increased police presence, the Weyburn Police Service and members of the RCMP conducted a high visibility traffic check stop during the evening hours. A large number of vehicles were checked, resulting in one individual being arrested on outstanding warrants, and another individual being charged with open liquor in a vehicle.
On Jan. 1, while on patrol police located an individual who was walking in the in northeast area of the city. As a result of the check a 16-year-old male was arrested and charged with two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking after a quantity of marijuana and psilocybin (magic mushrooms) were located and seized. The youth was released from custody and will be making his first court appearance in February.
Police attended to a house party on Jan. 1 after receiving a request to assist EMS after a 20-year-old female was reported as being violent and hallucinating. The female was restrained by police and taken by EMS to hospital for treatment.
Members of the public are reminded to deal with any mail, e-mail or cheque received by someone that they do not personally know with caution. If you do receive something which you believe may be a fraud, please contact the Weyburn Police Service.
On Jan. 4, police assisted EMS with an intoxicated male in the 100 block of Sixth Avenue; the 17-year-old male was taken to hospital as a precaution. He was later arrested for being drunk in public and was also found to have outstanding warrants. He was lodged in cells until sober.
