The Â鶹´«Ã½AVeast Regional College has begun moving into their temporary home in the City Centre Mall, so they can open for classes on Jan. 2, 2013.
The halls at their King Street campus are lined with boxes and furniture ready for moving.
The college will occupy over 16,000 square feet of mall space that was formerly used by Fields, V&S and a flower shop, plus the former pet shop space has been leased by the college since last fall.
"Our electrician, hairstylist and practical nursing students have been attending classes at the mall campus since the beginning of the fall semester," said Leslie Looker, the Weyburn campus manager for the college.
"The biggest part of the move is happening this week and it will be exciting to have everyone working together in one location again," she added.
The mall location for the college will include eight classrooms, plus offices for information technology, registrations, student services and campus services teams.
Formerly the college had considered locating at the former St. Dominic Savio school, but after reviewing their options with the ministry of Advanced Education, it was deemed that the mall location would be the most functional and cost-effective option for the college.
The move is a result of the ongoing renovation and new construction for the Weyburn Comprehensive School and Cornerstone School Division's high school renewal project. The college's current location at King Street is slated for demolition in the coming months, requiring the college to find temporary space for its Weyburn campus.
The college's administration offices will remain at the corner of Fourth Street and Railway Avenue.
"It's a bit confusing, but once the demolition is complete at the King Street location, construction will begin on a new Â鶹´«Ã½AVeast Regional College facility very near the same location. After that new facility is complete, the college's mall campus and Fourth Street administration offices will move back together under one roof," said Dave Harazny, the regional college's marketing manager.
