A former Weyburn city councillor and businessman, Nick Coroluick, is letting his name stand for the position of mayor in this fall鈥檚 municipal election.
He spent nine years on city council and has been a professional photographer as well as a sales associate at Barber Motors and Minard鈥檚 Leisure World before he took retirement this spring.
With more time available to commit to being a mayor, Coroluick wants to revitalize the city鈥檚 economy, in particular the downtown area.
鈥淚鈥檓 hoping I can get involved in things more, and I want to bring excitement back to Weyburn,鈥� said Coroluick, noting that with the impact of COVID-19 on the economy, he sees the necessity of opening up more opportunities for businesses in Weyburn.
鈥淚 think we can get excitement back, and get more people coming to town and be proud of who we are,鈥� he added.
Coroluick said he doesn鈥檛 think the current council has done a poor job, but he feels he can bring his experience and abilities to the council table and help close some deals for the city.
鈥淚鈥檝e got some ideas I鈥檇 like to map out, and maybe we can work on different ways of bringing positivity to the city, for the downtown area especially,鈥� said Coroluick. 鈥淲e have one of the prettiest downtown areas in Saskatchewan, as far as I鈥檓 concerned, and it just doesn鈥檛 have the vitality that it once had.鈥�
In terms of the hard-hit economy, he said, 鈥淚 think we鈥檙e up against the wall now right now with COVID, and the economy has started to turn. Now we need something to focus on and to move forward.鈥�
Coroluick feels one of his strengths is to bring a positive attitude to the table, and his ability to work with large groups, calling on his past associations with local organizations to help make things work.
He feels strongly the City should have a cooperative spirit, such as through the District Planning Commission in working with the RM of Weyburn, as it has been doing in recent years.
He also notes there are a number of new faces in the city who can help with moving the city forward, and added, 鈥淢arketing promotion is where I feel quite strongly about working with those committed to strengthening our community.鈥�
Coroluick鈥檚 involvement in the community includes serving as a past president of the Weyburn United Way, as the volunteer coordinator for the Saskatchewan Summer Games in 2004, as a director of the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce, and he has been a board member for Prairie Sky Co-operative Association from 2019 to the present.
He has also served on provincial and national organizations, including the Saskatchewan Professional Photographers Association, Professional Photographers of Canada, a former national vice-president of the Canada Jaycees, a former director of the Saskatchewan Recreation Vehicles Dealers Association, and a board member and past president of Access Communications.
He and wife Kathy have three married daughters and two grandsons.
