Report from the Weyburn Police Service for the week of Dec. 30, 2012 to Jan. 5, 2013:
During the reporting period, police attended to 65 calls for service.
*On January 4, police assisted EMS with an intoxicated male in the 100 Block of Sixth Avenue. The 17-year-old male was taken to the hospital as a precaution. He was later arrested for being drunk in public and was also found to have outstanding warrants. He was lodged in cells until sober.
*On January 2, police responded to a complaint of an individual who was being threatened by a male with a gun. The complainant reported they were being chased by a car and one of the occupants was pointing and shooting at them with a BB gun. As a result of the investigation a 19-year-old Weyburn male was arrested and charged with assault with a weapon, dangerous driving and using a weapon in the commission of an offence and will be appearing in court in February.
*On January 1, patrolling officers located an individual who was walking in the northeast area of the city. As a result of checking on the individual, a 16-year-old male was arrested and charged with two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, after police located and seized a quantity of marijuana and psilocybin (magic mushroom). The youth was released from custody and will be making his first court appearance in February.
*On January 1, police attended to a house party after receiving a request to assist EMS when a 20-year-old female was reported as being violent and hallucinating. The female was restrained by police and taken by EMS to hospital for treatment.
*On December 31, police received a complaint of a hit and run that had occurred in the Real Canadian Wholesale Club parking lot. The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
*Police attended to a two vehicle accident at Fifth Street and Souris Avenue after one of the drivers proceeded into the intersection too soon. No injuries were reported, although damage was serious enough to require one vehicle to be towed from the scene. One driver was charged with proceeding from a stop sign before safe to do so.
*As part of increased police presence for New Years Eve, the Weyburn Police Service and members of the RCMP conducted a high visibility traffic check stop during the evening hours. A large number of vehicles were checked, resulting in one individual being arrested on outstanding warrants and another individual being charged with open liquor in a vehicle.
*On December 30, a complaint of a hit and run was received after a vehicle, which had been parked in the 500 block of McGillivray Drive, was damaged. The vehicle was hit by another vehicle sometime between December28 and 30. The incident remains under investigation.
Police warn about fraud
*On December 31, a fraud complaint was received after an individual had received a cheque for over $3,000 and an accompanying letter advising the individual that they had been selected as a secret shopper. The letter advised the individual they were to wire money to an account and then keep the remaining amount for doing secret shopping. The complainant was concerned that this may be a scam and contacted the police prior to sending any money.
*On January 3, another fraud complaint was received of an individual who had received a similar cheque and letter requesting to be a secret shopper. Unfortunately in this case the individual did wire some money before finding out that this was a fraud. The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
Members of the public are reminded to deal with any mail, email or cheque received by someone that they do not personally know with caution. If it promises to make money with minimal investment then the saying, 'if it seems too good to be true, then it probably is' would be a good way of assessing these potential scams.
