The Weyburn Police Service experienced a busy week, responding to over 100 calls for service during the period of Sept. 14 to 20. Although most calls were resolved without charges, a total of 18 charges were laid during the week, including five under the Criminal Code of Canada, 10 under the Traffic Safety Act, and three under the City of Weyburn bylaws.
On Monday officers responded to a call forwarded from the RCMP reporting an erratic driver headed toward Weyburn. The vehicle was located and a traffic stop was conducted. The driver was found to be sober and warned or their driving actions.
Officers also dealt with a report of vandalism to a vehicle and conducted several other traffic stops resulting in several warnings and a few charges under the TSA.
With school back in and many children walking along the streets, the traffic awareness and enforcement continued on Tuesday with several more traffic stops conducted. Of the 10 TSA charges issued during the week, three were to motorists found to be using their cell phone while driving. During evening patrol, officers located a business that was insecure, secured it, and advised the owner.
Officers responded to a traffic collision with minor injuries on Wednesday, seized a small baggie that was left in a taxicab containing a suspected drug, spoke to an individual regarding harassing communications, and assisted a person requiring medical attention who was found slumped over on a sidewalk. A local business also reported a rental trailer that is unaccounted for and believed to be stolen.
A resident contacted WPS on Thursday reporting his vehicle had been stolen. The individual was unaware it was gone until he was contacted by an RCMP officer advising it was reportedly involved in a fuel theft northwest of Saskatoon. A suspect has been identified.
An early morning traffic stop resulted in the driver being charged with impaired driving on Friday. Officers also conducted a well-being check and dealt with a single vehicle collision and mischief to a vehicle.
Another individual was charged for impaired driving on Saturday night after officers responded to a local business reporting a disturbance. The individual had drove away from the business prior to police arrival but was subsequently located and dealt with accordingly.
Other calls included attending a domestic dispute, assisting EMS with an intoxicated person requiring medical attention, executing a warrant for arrest, and arresting and holding a heavily intoxicated person found in a public place until the individual was sober and released without charge.
On Sunday, among other calls, officers dealt with three matters involving domestic relations, a suspected impaired driver, found property, and a well-being check.
