The Salvation Army is expecting demand will be picking up for their food bank in Weyburn in the wake of businesses being closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. (The food bank is shown above during the open house held in December when they opened in their new location.)
The food bank has supplies in place right now, but without more donations, the supplies could start running out in about a week鈥檚 time, said Jennifer Lorinczy, community ministries coordinator.
鈥淚t鈥檚 coming,鈥� she said. 鈥淲e鈥檝e had a few people who鈥檝e lost their jobs. As more businesses close and they use up their last cheques, we鈥檙e expecting an increase in food bank usage in April.鈥�
The food bank could use donations of food staples, such as pasta and pasta sauce, canned fruits, meats and vegetables, and juices, said Lorinczy, adding, 鈥淧retty much everything.鈥�
She noted the food bank has had some 鈥渨onderful donations鈥� from businesses already, and added, 鈥淎s we get busier, we鈥檙e going to be needing more donations.鈥�
The Thrift Store was closed and as of March 17th, they are no longer accepting donations of household items for the store, said Lorinczy.
Food donations can be brought to the community and family services entrance at the back of the Salvation Army location or in one of the dropoff bins at the Wholesale Club or Co-op food store.
鈥淚f someone is in need of something, we could pick out a few things for them,鈥� she said. 鈥淚f they鈥檙e able to phone or message us on Facebook, that is the best way. We鈥檙e trying to limit our contact with the public. If they can reach out to us in one of those ways, we will get them the help they need.鈥�
She added they will make other arrangements if someone is unable to phone or get a message to them through Facebook.
Lorinczy noted they are available by phone from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday.
